Upwork, formerly known as Elance-oDesk, is the leading global online work platform where businesses and independent professionals connect and collaborate remotely. 

Elance-oDesk was reframed as Upwork in the year 2015. It is based out of Mountain View and San Francisco; California.

Upwork has nine million registered freelancers and four million registered clients.

Upwork was formed 18 months after Elance and oDesk announced their merger on 18^th December, 2013 to create Elance-oDesk, an online workplace with a combined total 8 million registered users. In the year 2003, oDesk was founded by Odysseas Tsatalos and Stratis Karamanlakis. Elance was founded in 1999 by Beerud Sheth.

With the launch of Upwork, the oDesk platform was upgraded and reframed and the company announced that the Elance platform will be phased out within a couple of years; resulting in a single freelance marketplace.

Upwork allows clients to call in for interview and hire, and finally work with freelancers and agencies through the company’s platform. 

Upwork accumulates 10% of the payment to the independent professional -no fee is charged to those offering jobs. 

All payments may be made using Credit Cards, Skrill, PayPal, or Bank Transfer. Payments are usually made through Upwork's escrow system that transfers the funds to freelancers after a 6 day period.

As of May 2014, Upwork reported USD $1B in annual billings, a total of ten million freelancers and four million clients worldwide. 

Generally, Freelancers may be hired for jobs on app and software development, engineering furthermore data science, creative services for instance, graphic design plus writing, business and administrative.
